What is AEO? answer engine optimization explained for business owners

AEO (also called AIEO or GEO) is the work of getting AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity to know, trust and recommend your business by name. Here is what it is, how it differs from SEO, and what actually moves the needle.

Short answer: AEO, or answer engine optimization, is making sure AI platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google's AI Overviews know your business exists, trust it, and name it when a customer asks who to call. It is the successor to SEO for the way people search now: one question, one short answer, a few names, a phone call.

Search changed, and most local businesses did not notice

For twenty years, getting found meant ranking. A customer typed "plumber near me", scrolled a page of blue links and a map pack, opened three tabs, compared, and called one.

That habit is fading fast. People now ask an assistant instead: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Siri, Copilot, or the AI Overview that Google now puts above its own results. They type a full question, in plain words, and get one short answer that names two or three businesses. There is no page two. Often there is no click at all. The customer reads the answer and calls whoever was in it.

If your business is in that answer, you get the call. If it is not, you were never considered.

AEO, defined

AEO (answer engine optimization) is the practice of making sure AI platforms know your business, trust it, and recommend it by name when someone asks the question you want to win.

You will also see it called AIEO (AI engine optimization) and GEO (generative engine optimization). They mean the same thing. Different acronym, same goal: be the name in the answer.

How an AI decides who to name

An AI assistant is not a phone book. When it answers "best HVAC company in Tampa", it is pulling together whatever it has learned and whatever it can look up in the moment, then picking the names it is most confident about. Three things drive that confidence.

1. Does it know you exist, and what you do?

AI reads your website, your Google Business Profile, Yelp, the BBB, industry directories, your social profiles, and anywhere else your name appears. If those sources disagree about your name, address, phone, hours or services, the AI hedges, and a hedging AI leaves you out. Consistency is the entry fee.

2. Does it have reasons to trust you?

AI leans heavily on what other people say about you. Review volume and recency, the words reviewers use, local news mentions, "best of" roundups, chamber and association listings, and citations on sites the model already trusts. A business with 400 recent reviews that mention "same-day" and "fair price" is a safe recommendation. A business with 12 reviews from 2021 is a risk.

3. Can it lift an answer from your site?

When an AI looks something up live, it wants a page that plainly answers the question in the customer's words. "Do you do emergency repairs on weekends?" answered in one clear sentence beats a paragraph of marketing copy. Pages built around real customer questions get quoted and cited. Pages built around keywords get skipped.

AEO versus old SEO

Old SEO AEO
The goal Rank on page one Be named in the answer
What the customer sees Ten links to compare One answer with a few names
What wins Keywords, backlinks, page speed Consistent data, trust signals, answer-ready content
How you measure it Rankings and clicks Mentions per question, per AI platform
Who it rewards The best marketer The business AI is most confident recommending

Notice the last row. AEO rewards businesses that are genuinely well regarded and easy to verify. That is good news for owners who do good work and have been out-marketed.

What actually moves the needle

In rough order of effort to payoff:

  1. Fix your facts everywhere. Same name, address, phone, hours, service list and service area on your site, Google, Apple Maps, Yelp, Bing, Facebook, and the directories for your trade. Boring, and the single biggest unlock.
  2. Make your site answer real questions. One page per service, written the way a customer asks, with prices or ranges where you can, service area spelled out, and an FAQ that answers what people actually call to ask.
  3. Get reviews steadily, not in bursts. Recency matters. A simple post-job text asking for a Google review, every job, beats a one-time campaign.
  4. Earn third-party mentions. Local press, sponsorships that get written up, supplier and association pages, "best of" lists. Each one is a source an AI can lean on.
  5. Add structured data. Schema markup tells machines plainly what you are, where you are, what you offer and what customers say. It is cheap and most competitors have none.
  6. Measure monthly. Ask the major AIs your money questions every month and log who they name. Nothing else tells you whether the work is working.

How to check where you stand right now

Open ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Ask each one, in plain words, the question a customer would ask: "Who's the best [your trade] in [your city]?" and "I need [specific service] in [your area], who should I call?" Write down the names. Do it for five or six variations.

If you are in most answers, protect that. If you are in none, you have a visibility problem, not a quality problem, and it is fixable.

Questions owners ask

Is AEO the same as AIEO or GEO?

Yes. AIEO (AI engine optimization) and GEO (generative engine optimization) describe the same goal: being the business an AI names in its answer. We say AEO because what you are optimizing for is the answer.

Do I still need SEO if I do AEO?

A clear, fast, honest website still matters, because AI reads it. But ranking in ten blue links is no longer the finish line. Most of the work that earns AI mentions, such as consistent business data, reviews and third-party coverage, is different from classic keyword and backlink work.

How long does AEO take to show results?

Foundation fixes like business information and listings can change AI answers within weeks. Earning trust across review sites, directories and local press takes steady work over a few months. Any firm promising overnight results is guessing.
